A town square (also known as a square, plaza, public square, city square, urban square, or piazza) is an open public space[1] in the heart of a traditional town that is commonly used for community gatherings. The civic center, market square, and village green are all related concepts.
The majority of squares are hardscapes suitable for open markets, concerts, political rallies, and other events requiring firm ground. Town squares are typically surrounded by small shops such as bakeries, meat markets, cheese shops, and clothing stores due to their central location. They frequently have a well, monument, statue, or other feature in the center.
